The Brain of software-defined optical networks (SDON) should fulfill different connection lengths and hold times, or different bandwidth requests and flexible network configurations for different clients and users. The Brain of the SDON as the software can optimize the optical link parameters to achieve predefined SDON goals. The Brain can select different overhead coding schemes, configurable modulation formats, and the required digital signal processing (DSP) in transmitter and receiver to achieve the SDON goals and performance.
